What is the most important thing you have learned during field work?
I think that the most important thing I learned while doing field work is, that kids want to learn. So many times kids put off that they hate school and dont want to be there but they really do. If they are willing to come to shool and want to learn, we as techers should return that love and respect to them and teach them. It is something so simple but I think that some people forget that important factor.
We have to get the kids excited to learn new things and show them that learning is fun and will help them in their lives. We need to give them the love and devotion that school and learning deserves. We must have compassion, love, kindness and happiness in our classroom and exhibt these characteristics so that the students will feed off of our attitude.
As teachers, we have to have that undying love for education and give our students the best possible education we can.

What are the procedures the teacher uses to make everything run smoothly in the class?
When I first started going they did a class vs. teacher point system that would win them a free morning party on a Friday after a certain number was reached. If the teacher got more points than them they had to do silent reading instead of the party. I thought this was a clever idea because it motivates them to do good for more than just one day. They cant earn a party in a day it takes them a whole month so for a month they are trying their best.
The teacher also came up a with a pin system where they each have a pin on a board and if they are not listening they move a pin down and that results in 5 minutes of recess missed, then the next one is the whole recess, and eventually works down to meeting with parents. They can also move up and get rewards for doing good in the class. I really like this system for more of a personal reward/punishment if just one student is being bad and the rest of the class deserves a point for their party.
I can see now how hard it is to keep the whole classroom under the same reward/punishment when their is just one or two trouble students. Its important to have an alternative for those students. Both systems I thought were a great way to handle the classroom behavior.

What strategies does the teacher us to actively engage the students? How effective are these?
I love when teachers are willing to allow students to comment on the lesson, which is a way of engaging the students. Also planning activities that the students will all enjoy and learn from are far better than a silent sit down class talk.
We were doing a lesson on the 5 senses of the body and the teacher used the great weather to her advantage. Instead of making the students stay inside and just think of things, or use the classroom to explore we went on a Sense Scavenger-hunt out on the playground. The students were thrilled to get to learn outside and it made it really fun to see what creative things they came up with. When we came back into the room, they then had to draw a picture of what they found on a piece of paper and we rewarded them with a treat which was also their taste sense. They really enjoyed this, and learned a new way of connecting the senses. I know that when I teach I would rather be doing a fun and exciting lesson than making them sit in the classroom the whole time. It can be very fun for the teacher as well to get active with the students.

What is the most important role a teacher plays? Why?
What is the most challenging role a teacher plays? Why?
I think that the most important role for a teacher is being a self-esteem booster and motivator. I definitely think that education is very important, but if a student is not confident in themselves how will they succeed in the classroom, or any part of life? Being someone that encourages them to do their best and to try will go much further than telling them they did the assignment wrong. I substitute teach and I can already see how this directly affects the students. I had one little boy who was a distraction and problem to the whole classroom, but during one assignment I pulled him aside and helped him personally work on his math and he was willing and wanting to understand what we were doing. The more I praised him and gave him a chance to show me how much he knew the happier he was and the more he did the assignment without resisting my help. Being that person that can change their life to love learning can mean more to them than anyone ever knows.
I think the most challenging role for a teacher is when personal life gets too involved. When a student feels too comfortable with the teacher and shares things that shouldn't be. It's hard for a teacher to explain to a student exactly where the line draws. It can be hard legally also, because in certain situations you need to go to the police which can cause many more problems for you, the student, and their family.

The first thing I have participated in was fixing a math test that had the correct answers circled on all of the students copies. I had to make the rest of the choices match it by making my own circles around the other letter choices so that they all looked the same. It took me a while which made me realize how much time it takes to prepare for different lessons, tests, and activities.
I also read their spelling words to them, and corrected the test afterwards. Giving the test was quite interesting to see how each student responded to the pressure differently and to see who needed the words repeated more. Grading it was really fun! I loved being able to leave the students notes on their papers, like Good job! Awesome work! Great spelling! and fun things like that to make them feel good about themselves.
Being apart of these two different tasks as a teacher was very helpful and eye opening to see what kinds of things a teacher has to do. I can see why they would have to stay after school longer and get there early.

What modifications for exceptional students do you see?
In a regular education classroom, it is very important for the teacher to work with students who need some extra help in their class. The teacher and student relationship is very important in this situation to communicate between the two what will work best to make the student most successful. When neccesary, bring the parents in and meet with them also so you can all share your concerns and ideas and come together on a plan to get the most out of the class.
Being the teacher you have to be willing to give the student some extra "privileges" in the class. In some situations allowing the student extra time on homework may be something you have to change. There is also things in your actual classroom that you can do. Move their desk by yours so they feel comfort from being near you, and put them by someone who wont distract them. Giving them a test after school orally might be a great way to help them on tests. Letting the student even go into the hallway to read in silence might help them to focus.
It is simple things that you can do to make the learning experience positive for everyone. Showing that you care can go a long way with a student who doesn't have motivation to try in the class. Being open and good at communicating with one another is a sure way to move forward together instead of standing still, or even moving backwards.

I am going to tell about a times I had to work with a small group of kids.
I have had a few different opportunities to work with group of kids. In high school I was on many different sports teams and we would spend days doing clinics for the kids. We would have to work together to teach the kids to do simple skills in the sports such as dribbling, shooting, passing, etc. They would all learn the skills at different levels and speeds so it was our job to keep helping the slower kids but pushing the faster learning kids.
Another opportunity that I have had with kids is through church activities. When I was one of the older girls in my Young Womens classes we would have to work with the girls that were younger than us and to help them have a smooth transition into their new classes.
When I substitute teach it is important to "spread myself thin" over the entire classroom so that I can help all the students equally and make sure that they all are understanding the things being taught. We have to use our best abilities to help all the students in their own ways to understand what we are teaching them. Having a good attitude and positive outlook on their education can make all the difference in a student wanting to learn and be eager to go to school each day.
